[国外英语作文]My Grandmother

我的祖母

by Hikaru Takahashi

She always has a little smile on her face in her face portraits. Although she is smiling, there is a kind of severity and dignity about her. She passed away on a cold February morning eight years ago. When my father came to wake me up, I was seized with fear and began to shake, knowing what had happened. Yes, she had just passed away.

She is the one whom I respected the most. When I was a child, I was proud to show her wedding picture to my friends because everyone said that she was beautiful. However, for some reason she was keeping all the pictures of her youth away from me. She did not want me to show them to others, but I liked to look at them and always tried to find them.

She was from a prestigious family, and her parents were very strict with her. She went a girl's high school in Taiwan and then returned to Japan to go to one of the most famous women's universities. She seemed to follow her parents' will and lived very happily.

It must have been very surprising to her parents when she told them she was going to quit school and become an actress. She chose to be a stage actress even thought it would mean giving up everything she possessed: family, education, and wealth. Of course, her parents would not allow her-to be an actress, but her strong will was not to be an actress, but her strong will was not be changed. Finally, she was kicked out of the family and went to acting school.

"I was very proud to go backstage and see her surrounded by lots of flowers from her fans," her brother told me. "She was a tall woman, so she played a lot of male roles." In one of her stage pictures, her glaring eyes and tightly closed lips gave a manly impression. However, she finally did get married to my grandfather.

Actually, her parents arranged her marriage. At that time, nobody knew how much her marriage would change her life. She had been living a hopeful life, doing what she really wanted. But once she got married, she had to move to my grandfather's house in the countryside. She had to work in the field, a completely new experience for her. She had to get along with other women there who did not have any higher education and who devoted themselves only to hard work. She had to accustom herself to the life of the countryside. Still, she did not become a village woman who never cared about her appearance. "She always spruced herself up and was somehow different form us," one of her friends said.

She did not tell me how hard it was for her, but I noticed it a little later when I got older. I understood why she was keeping all those pictures of her youth away from me. She did not even want to remember the time when she was really happy. She had never shown her suffering to anyone. Her pride did not allow her to do so.

Her last days in the hospital were too painful to look at. She could not even breath by herself because of cancer. Two small tubes were placed in her nose. She was a mere shadow of her former beautiful and strong self. However, she still had her pride as a stage actress and a woman from a prestigious family. Every morning in the hospital, she put make-up on her face and groomed her hair neatly. "She did not forget to be a woman up until her last moment," a nurse who had been taking care of her said.

In my memory, she is still living as a beautiful woman with severity. Her life was not happy all the time, but no other person knew how hard it was. whenever I describe her life, I use the same expression: "She lived a very short and deep life, as many beautiful flowers do."
