An Unforgettable Man
一个令人难忘的人 by Dastagir Firoz I once spent a long vacation in a mountainous region of my homeland - Afghanistan. And here I came to know an unforgettable man. We had been invited to stay in a large and airy room which was in a qala of a tribe; the qala was built of dry mud and stems of some of the strongest trees in the region. In fact, it was just a large ordinary-looking "mountain-house" viewed from outside. My uncle Hakim, who knew the Khan (meaning chief of the house) accompanied me on the trip. The khan's people did not call him by his formal name, Qader. They called him khan to show respect to their leader. In an Afghan family it is an offense and insult to call a leader or an elder by their first name. The khan was a member of the Pathan tribe. That spring the mountains were beautiful. The blooms of trees spread a purple blanket over the mountains. The calm mountainous breeze carried the fragrance of the blooms. From far away we saw a man dressed in white on a white horse with four more horsemen rapidly and disturbing the dust of the bottom of the mountains. They came closer and closer. When they reached us, a few of the khan's men went forward, gave him greetings, and bowed: the rest of the men stayed back, waiting for orders. The khan had just returned with a few bloody rabbits hanging on the sides of his horse. He had a thick, black moustache. His bright white turban wrapped around his high hat made of thick golden thread gave him a manly appearance. He wore a colorful Afghan vest, which matched his pair of chapli, which were also hand-made. He wore a long collarless shirt with hand-embroidered silk designs and a tunban. There was a strap of thick leather across his chest under the vest, which held about one hundred bullets. In addition, he had a shotgun on his shoulder and a rifle at his side. As he jumped off the horse, the khan murmured to his chef, "I want to the rabbits to be cooked tonight for our guests." Then he came forward rapidly with wide, stiff steps to shake hands with my uncle and me. The khan had a great deal of respect for my uncle Hakim. After all they were old-time friends. The khan took us inside his complex. What unusual and beautiful primitive country furnishings he had! Most of the rooms were of an old type brass and burned kerosene. Lots of antique ornaments were seen all over the house. He was a man of taste. He was rich in his village. HE had a lot of other men who were loyal to him. Other men and khan from nearby villages knew him. Obviously he was living a life in which everything was in "accordance with nature." That is, there were no signs of modern inventions. If you heard a sound, it would only be the sound of leaves on the trees which were shivering from the breeze of spring, or the song of singing birds. Nowhere could we see a factory or a modern office building. All we saw were houses or camps of nomads and their herds. All we saw were purple blue skies with pieces of white clouds of spring extending far away. The skies were so clear that they seemed to be directly connected to the top of the mountains. One day my uncle suggested to the khan that he should live in the city, He replied with a smile which did not approve the idea. "No sir, I am not a man of the city. I lived on the land of God and I feel myself closer to him when his phenomena are visible with my own naked eyes. I would get very depressed if I had to live in the city," he continued. "I love guests and I honor them. I will support and protect the refugees regardless of the cost, and by the same token, we will attack any unwelcome strangers who try to disturb us or dispossess us of any of our God-given lives or property." I was fond of this man's bravery and helping hand. We stayed there for three months. To me, it was a wonderful vacation. We talked about him with our family and took a few pictures of him that bore the memory of his Pathan way of life in our minds for many years to come. 8.a colorful Afghan vest, which matched his pair of chapli 14.of an old type brass and burned kerosene 15.camps nomads and their herds 游牧人的帐篷,以及他们的牧群 16.by the same token 同样 仅供学习参考之用,转贴请注明出处。
